RESUMO

The selection of material used on the occlusal surface of implant-supported prostheses is important, as these materials can transmit destructive forces to the interface between the alveolar bone and the implant. Different prosthetic materials are suggested for implant-supported prostheses. The choice of prosthetic material is a controversial issue, and there is a consensus that implant survival is not affected by the prosthetic material. Three-dimensional finite element studies are often used in dentistry to estimate the stress distribution that occurs in the implant system, peri-implant bone, and prosthetic components. To analyze the influence of the prosthetic restorative material on the stresses in bone tissue and peri-implant through a literature review of three-dimensional finite element studies. The search for articles was performed in the PubMed/Medline database up to November 2021. The selected articles were independently evaluated by two different reviewers. The information collected was author and year of publication, dimensions of implants used, the material used in the prosthetic crown, simulated force and direction, and conclusion and effect. After searching, 14 studies were selected for full reading, and based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, all could be included in this review. The articles were based on evidence-based laboratory medicine. After analyzing these articles, it was concluded that the prosthetic materials used on the occlusal surface do not interfere with the destruction of stresses to the bone and peri-implant tissue, both in single prostheses and protocol-type prostheses, when three-dimensional finite element method is used.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of simulated gastric acid solution (SGAS) and resin cement composition on the shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia-based materials with different levels of translucency to composite resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 40 medium-opacity (MO; 3Y-TZP) and 40 medium-translucency (MT; 4Y-PSZ) zirconia slabs were distributed into four groups according to the composition of the resin luting system (MDP free or with MDP [primer + Panavia V5]) and storage method (distilled water or SGAS [5% hydrochloric acid]). Composite resin cylinders were cemented on the zirconia surface and stored for 91 hours. SBS, failure mode, and surface characterization analyses via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were performed. SBS data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey test, and failure mode was assessed using one-way ANOVA (P < .05). RESULTS: Storage media (P = .180), resin cement (P = .110), zirconia (P = .404), and their interactions did not affect SBS values. Bond strength ranged from 21.41 to 26.11 MPa. SEM images showed that SGAS modified the surface topography of zirconia and resin cement. The presence of chlorine and silicon (wt%) were higher after SGAS storage than after water storage in both cements used, while barium was higher only for the MDP cement. There was a prevalence of mixed failures for most of the groups. CONCLUSION: The SBS between both types of zirconia and resin cement was not affected by SGAS, although changes in zirconia topography were observed after SGAS exposure. The presence of MDP in the cement layer had no effect on the SBS challenged by SGAS.

BACKGROUND: Temporary prosthesis protects the oral tissues, in addition to providing aesthetic look and masticatory function until a definitive prosthesis is manufactured. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of glaze and 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) on the physical and mechanical properties of bis-acryl, and to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of CHX. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty specimens of bis-acryl resin were made. Over 40 of them the glaze was applied. One specimen with and 1 specimen without glaze were placed in niches of an appliance manufactured for each patient. Each of the 20 volunteers received 2 devices. Initially, the volunteers used one device and treated it with sucrose for 7 days (control), and later they used the other device and treated it with sucrose and CHX for 7 days (test). Color, microhardness, roughness, surface energy, and insoluble extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) tests were performed. All results were submitted to the Tukey's test, with the exception of the EPS results, which were submitted to the Student's t test. RESULTS: The ΔE00 of the unglazed control group was significantly higher than that of the unglazed test group. In all groups, a significant decrease in microhardness occurred over time. At both times, the glaze significantly increased the microhardness of the specimens (in all the glazed groups). At the final time, the test glaze group showed significantly higher microhardness compared with the control glaze group. Roughness in the groups without glaze increased significantly with CHX treatment over time. At both times, the glaze generated a significant reduction in roughness in the control and test groups. There was a significant reduction in surface energy over time in all groups. In most comparisons, the glazed groups showed significantly higher surface energy values compared with the unglazed control group. At the final time point, the unglazed test group showed a significantly higher surface energy value than the unglazed control group; and the glazed test group showed a significantly higher surface energy value compared with the glazed control group. The resins that received CHX had a significantly lower amount of biofilm. CONCLUSIONS: Color values were clinically acceptable in all tested groups. At both time points, the roughness values were clinically acceptable only in the glazed groups. Glaze increased the microhardness of the specimens. Microhardness and surface energy were reduced over time in all groups. Chlorhexidine can help prevent microhardness degradation. Glaze and CHX can increase surface energy. Chlorhexidine reduced the amount of bacterial biofilm.

Background: To evaluate the stress distribution of three-element prostheses on two different implant systems (External Hexagon (EH) or Morse Taper (MT)) and with two different retention mechanisms (screw-retained or cemented), by photoelastic analysis and strain gauge analyses. Material and Methods: Four photoelastic and 24 strain gauge models of a partially edentulous maxilla were made and were divided in four groups according to connection and retention system: Group I (EH-C) - external hexagon+cement-retained prosthesis; Group II (EH-S) external hexagon+screw-retained prosthesis; Group III (MT-C) - morse taper+cement-retained prosthesis; Group IV (MT-S) - morse taper+screw-retained prosthesis. The implants were installed in the axial position, the first in the region of element 15 and the distal implant in the region of element 17. Loads of 100 N were applied on the occlusal surface of the prosthesis for 10 seconds. For the photoelasticity analysis, photographic images were taken and were evaluated according to the number of high-intensity fringes. For the strain gauge analysis, the strain gauges were positioned on the marginal crest of the implants and on the apical region, being numbered for analysis of the stress distribution in each region. The electrical signals were captured and processed by specific software. Results: Higher concentration of tension was observed in the apical region of the implants and mainly in the distal implant, where the formation of fringes was higher. The microstrain values obtained for each group were similar: EH-C (454±18,3 µÉ›); EH-S (469±94 µÉ›); MT-C (466±49,8 µÉ›); MT-S (460±36,6 µÉ›). It was observed that apical position had higher stress concentrations for all analyzed groups. Conclusions: The different connections and fixation mode did not interfere in the amount of tension generated in the tissue adjacent to the implant, also the region that generated the greatest amount of tension was in the apical region of the anterior implant. PURPOSE: To develop and to characterize a hybrid interface between yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) transformed layer and silica-based nanofilm to enable a better bonding between Y-TZP and a veneering ceramic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-six fully-sintered rectangular Y-TZP specimens were distributed into 6 groups, according to the surface treatment applied: C (control): no treatment; Al: 27 µm-alumina particle abrasion; Ht: hydrothermal treatment in autoclave for 15h; Si20: 20 cycles of silica deposition using room-temperature atomic layer deposition (RT-ALD); Si40: 40 cycles of RT-ALD; Ht + Si40: hydrothermal treatment followed by 40 cycles of RT-ALD. RT-ALD was performed by the sequential exposure of specimens to vapor of tetramethoxysilane orthosilicate (TMOS) and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH). Y-TZP surface wettability and shear bond strength (SBS) between Y-TZP and the veneering ceramic were analyzed for all groups after surface treatments. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test were used for data analysis (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS: The highest contact angle was observed for the control group (64.46 ± 6.09 θ), while the lowest values (p < 0.001) were presented after Si20 (29.85 ± 4.23 θ) and Si40 (30.37 ± 5.51 θ) treatments. Hydrothermal treatment (49.3 ± 2.69 θ) and alumina abrasion (45.84 ± 4.12 θ) resulted in intermediate contact angle values. The highest SBS values were observed for Al (16.74 ± 1.68 MPa) and Ht (15.27 ± 2.11 MPa) groups (p < 0.018). Groups Si20 (9.66 ± 1.22 MPa), Si40 (9.33 ± 2.11 MPa), Ht + Si40 (9.37 ± 1.02 MPa) and C (12.54 ± 2.64 MPa) all resulted in similar SBS results (p > 0.998). CONCLUSION: The experimental treatments proposed enhanced surface wettability, but shear bond strength between Y-TZP and veneering ceramic was not improved. Alumina particle-abrasion improved SBS values while a decrease in wettability was observed.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the surface of zirconia (Y-TZP) submitted to different surface treatments (with and without plasma associations) and to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) between veneering ceramic (VC) and Y-TZP after different aging methods. METHODS: 301 Y-TZP specimens were fabricated and distributed into 7 groups: C (control): no treatment; Al: airborne abrasion with 27 µm Al2O3 particle; L: liner; P: plasma; Al + L: airborne + liner; Al + P: airborne + plasma; P + L: plasma + liner. The Y-TZP surface was characterized by SEM, EDS, AFM, surface profilometry, surface-free energy (SFE), and XRD. SBS between Y-TZP and VC was verified after three aging protocols: initial, after hydrothermal aging (autoclave for 5 h), or thermal fatigue (30,000 baths - 5-55 °C). One- (profilometry, SFE) and two-way ANOVA (SBS), and Tukey's HSD test were used. RESULTS: For the plasma groups, a full globular surface coverage was observed (SEM, AFM). Si was found for Al, L, Al + L, and P + L. Roughness was lower for C, P, and Al + P. For SFE, the highest values were found when the liner was applied (>74.59 nm/Nm). The highest monoclinic content was observed for Al + L (6.96%) and Al + P (5.86%). For the initial period, Al and P + L presented the lowest SBS values (<5.85 MPa; P > 0.331). The highest SBS values were found for L, P, and P + L (hydrothermal aging) and for P, L, Al + L, and Al + P (thermal fatigue). SIGNIFICANCE: Changes in Y-TZP topography and the SBS with the VC were found, according to treatments performed. Plasma treatment improved SBS and did not cause phase transformation.

OBJECTIVE: A silica-based nanofilm has been successfully deposited via Room-Temperature Atomic Layer Deposition (RT-ALD) on the surface of a glass. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical performance of a hybrid interface created between yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) transformed layer and silica-based nanofilm via RT-ALD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fully-sintered Y-PSZ (14 × 4.0 × 1.5 mm) specimens in different translucencies (MO, MT, LT; IPS e.max Zircad, Ivoclar Vivadent) were distributed in 5 groups: control (C - no treatment); hydrothermal treatment (HT- 15h, 134°C, 2 bar); alumina blasting (B - 50 µm Al2O3); RT-ALD silica deposition (S); HT followed by silica deposition (HTS). RT-ALD cycles consisted of the sequential exposure of specimens to tetramethoxysilane orthosilicate (TMOS - 60s) and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH - 10 min) vapors in 40 cycles. Mechanical performance was analyzed by flexural strength (FS) (n = 10) and fatigue failure load (staircase method; n = 20) tests. Surface hardness (H) and Young's modulus (YM) were analyzed by nanoindentation. For surface chemical and topographical characterization, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed. Data from surface H, YM, FS, and fatigue limit (FL) were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: The interaction between material and treatment had a significant effect on FS (p < 0.001). The FS values ranged from 436.23 MPa to 856.65 MPa. HT resulted in the highest FS (856.65 MPa) for LT and the lowest FS (436.23 MPa) for MO zirconia. For all materials, S and B treatments resulted in similar FS values (p > 0.410). S did not affect FL when compared to the C group (p > 0.277) for any material investigated. HTS resulted in higher FL than S for LT and MO materials (p < 0.001). Surface hardness and modulus were similar between control and S-treated specimens for all materials analyzed. XPS analysis showed homogeneous silica content after 20 and 40 RT-ALD cycles, and SEM did not show significant changes in surface morphology between C and S-treated specimens. CONCLUSION: RT-ALD resulted in effective silica deposition without any deleterious effect on zirconia-based materials mechanical properties. Alumina blasting promoted higher alteration on surface topography. HT prior to S resulted in superior FL (for MO and MT) and flexural strength (MO) for some of the materials investigated.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the dimensional stability and maintenance of details of conventional and high stability alginates up to 5-day storage. METHODS: Two types of alginates were selected (n=10) for this study, conventional (Hydrogum) and high stability alginates (Hydrogum 5), which were produced with the aid of a cylindrical metal block and a ring-shaped metal mold (Specifications 18, 19, and 25, ANSI/ADA). Ten images were obtained from the molds for the dimensional stability test, which were taken immediately after their production and at each different storage periods (15 min, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h, and 120 h) by a digital camera. The specimens were kept hermetically sealed in plastic bags (23°C) and then used to obtain 140 (n=70) dental stone models, used in the detail reproduction test, in which the angular accuracy of three grooves (20 µm, 50 µm, and 75 µm) was observed at each period. The details reproduction accuracy was classified using a predetermined score classification. Measurements of dimensional changes were made in the Corel DRAW X6 program. The data were submitted to the Student's t-test (α?#8197;= 0.05). RESULTS: A statistically significant difference concerning the size of the matrix was observed after 24h for both alginates, and a statistically significant negative linear dimensional change (contraction) was verified after 24 h of storage (1.52% for the high stability alginate, and 1.32% for the conventional alginate). The high stability alginate kept the full details for 72 hours, while the conventional alginate, for 24 h. Both alginates reproduced the 75 µm groove at all storage periods. CONCLUSION: Impressions made with both alginates presented satisfactory clinical results when the alginates were immediately poured.

The study evaluated the influence of cycles and methods of an ocular prosthesis resin on cytotoxicity toward human conjunctival cells. Resins were polymerized by water bath (WB, 74 °C or 100 °C for 30 min to 9 h), microwave (MW, 1200 W, 3 to 14 min and 30 s at 0 to 720 W), or autopolymerization (AP, room temperature for 20 min ± 60 °C for 30 min). Degree of conversion (DC), cytotoxicity, level of inflammatory mediators, gene expression of different markers, and apoptosis were evaluated. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey test (p < 0.05). WB with longer processing time at higher temperature had highest DC (85.6%) and higher TGF ß1-gene expression (1.39); long cycle low power MW showed lowest DC (69.6%), lower cell proliferation (85.4%, MTT), and large IL-2 release (39,297 ng/mL). AP with additional processing time showed lower cell proliferation (75.3%, Alamar Blue), and AP polymerized at room temperature showed higher CASP 9-gene expression (1.21). AP methods showed higher IL-6 release (>277 pg/mL). Short cycle medium power MW had higher IL-23 release (534.2 pg/mL). MW (long and short cycles) and AP polymerizations have triggered a more intense inflammatory response. Among methods recommended by the manufacturer, WB showed high DC and less cytotoxicity.

The aim of this study was to compare the use of titanium and ceramic implants for overdentures in terms of their failure rates, surface treatments, and marginal bone loss (MBL). The literature was searched using the PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases up to October 2019. Clinical studies in which ceramic and titanium implants for overdentures were compared in terms of their failure rates, surface treatments, and MBL were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis was performed based on the Mantel-Haenszel and inverse variance methods using a fixed-effects model and 95% confidence intervals. A total of 2747 publications were identified after the exclusion of duplicate articles. Fifteen were selected for full-text reading, and 2 were included in the review. Each of the 2 studies initially enrolled 24 patients, and a total of 38 patients (mean age of 62 years) were evaluated at the 1-year follow-up. A total of 112 titanium implants (success rate of 71.1%) and 146 ceramic implants (success rate of 65.9%) were placed. Twenty titanium implants failed, and an associated MBL of 0.15 mm was observed. For ceramic implants, 42 failures occurred, and an associated MBL of 0.33 mm was observed. Titanium implants provided better clinical results (less MBL and lower failure rate) for the support of overdentures than did ceramic implants.

Aim: This systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of the laser treatment on bond strength between Y-TZP and the resin cement or with the veneering ceramic, and the effect on the alteration of the Y-TZP surface roughness. Settings and Design: Systematic review and meta analysis following PROSPERO guidelines. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive review was performed up to September 2020 on four databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library), using the combination of keywords: "laser AND zirconia AND surface treatment AND bond strength". Statistical Analysis Used: The meta-analysis was based on the Mantel-Haenszel and inverse variance methods. The continuous outcome was evaluated by mean difference and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Results: A total of 37 studies were identified for the inclusion of data, with only in vitro studies. The types of laser reported in the studies were: Er:YAG, Nd:YAG, Er,Cr:YSGG, CO2, Femtosecond, and Yb lasers. A random-effect model found statistically significant differences between lasers and control groups of Y-TZP (P < 0.00001; MD: 3.08; 95% CI: 2.58 to 3.58). Only the bond strength with the Er:YAG laser did not present statistical difference (P = 0.51; MD: 0.22; 95% CI: -0.44-0.88). In another analysis, a random-effect model found a statistically significant difference between the laser and control groups on surface roughness (P < 0.00001; MD: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.86 to 1.06). Conclusions: Laser irradiation is capable to improve the Y-TZP surface roughness and the bond strength of zirconia with resin cement and veneering ceramics. However, there is a lack of laser protocol for the zirconia surface, a fact that makes a simple and direct comparison difficult.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The use of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) may damage bisacrylate composite resin interim restorations, but whether they can be protected with an application of alcohol and/or the use of a glaze is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of applying a 70% alcohol solution on the physical and mechanical properties of a bisacrylate composite resin, with and without the application of a light-polymerizing glaze subjected to 0.12% CHX twice a day for 7 days. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty specimens of an autopolymerized bisacrylate composite resin were divided into 4 groups (n=10): Group C (without alcohol, without glaze), Group G (without alcohol, with glaze), Group A (with alcohol, without glaze), and Group AG (with alcohol, with glaze). All specimens were submitted to in vitro treatment with 0.12% CHX for 7 days, and tests of color alteration (ΔE00), microhardness, roughness, and surface were performed initially and after treatment. Data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey HSD test (α=.05). RESULTS: Group A had the lowest mean value of ΔE00 with a significant statistical difference from Group C. The groups with alcohol presented higher microhardness mean values compared with groups without alcohol in both periods of analysis, except for the groups with glaze in the final period. Group C showed higher mean roughness values in comparison with Group A in both periods. Group AG presented higher mean roughness values than Group G. Surface energy values did not vary significantly among groups, except between Groups C and A in the final period. CONCLUSIONS: The application of alcohol optimized the properties of the autopolymerized bisacrylate composite resin analyzed, with and without the application of glaze. Overall, the use of CHX changed the microhardness and roughness when the glaze was applied.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the optical, chemical, and mechanical properties of feldspathic porcelain after handling with different instrument materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Feldspathic porcelain was manipulated with different spatula compositions: metal spatula (MS), plastic spatula (PS), and glass spatula (GS) for the fabrication of 30 (n = 10) disks. Contrast ratio (CR), translucency parameter (TP), and surface Knoop microhardness (KHN) were measured. The color change (ΔE00 ) was evaluated using the CIEDE2000 system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for surface analysis. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey test (P < 0.05). RESULTS: All groups presented different morphological surfaces with higher presence of Al on the MS. PS group presented lower Al, Si, K than MS, and GS. Higher CR was observed for PS (0.734; P < 0.043), followed by MS (0.696; P < 0.043) and GS (0.65; P < 0.011). The highest TP (13.06) and KHN (386.27) were presented by GS (P < 0.001). MS and PS presented similar KHN results. The higher ΔE00 were found for plastic/metal comparison. Also, the L* values for the MS group (67.49) were lower than the other groups. CONCLUSION: The use of metal spatula promoted higher color alteration during feldspathic porcelain manipulation than did the other materials. Handling with glass instrument promoted higher microhardness than other spatula materials. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The effect of the material used for ceramic handling on feldspathic porcelain properties is often ignored. This study shows that the handling spatula material must be carefully chosen to avoid inadvertent changes to the feldspathic porcelain restoration.

OBJECTIVE: Nanotechnology has progressed significantly and particles as small as 3 nm are being employed in resin-based restorative materials to improve clinical performance. The goal of this review is to report the progress of nanotechnology in Restorative Dentistry by reviewing the advantages, limitations, and applications of resin-based restorative materials with nanoparticles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature review was conducted using PubMed/Medline, Scopus and Embase databases. In vitro, in vivo and in situ research studies published in English between 1999 and 2020, and which focused on the analysis of resin-based restorative materials containing nanoparticles were included. RESULTS: A total of 140 studies were included in this review. Studies reported the effect of incorporating different types of nanoparticles on adhesive systems or resin composites. Mechanical, physical, and anti-bacterial properties were described. The clinical performance of resin-based restorative materials with nanoparticles was also reported. CONCLUSIONS: The high surface area of nanoparticles exponentially increases the bioactivity of materials using bioactive nanofillers. However, the tendency of nanoparticles to agglomerate, the chemical instability of the developed materials and the decline of rheological properties when high ratios of nanoparticles are employed are some of the obstacles to overcome in the near future. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In spite of the recent advancements of nanotechnology in resin-based restorative materials, some challenges need to be overcome before new nano-based restorative materials are considered permanent solutions to clinical problems.

Caracterizar a superfície de zircônia (Y-TZP) submetida a diferentes tratamentos de superfície (com e sem associações de plasma) e avaliar a resistência ao cisalhamento (RC) com a cerâmica de cobertura (CC) após diferentes métodos de envelhecimento. 301 espécimes de 3Y-TZP (IPS e.max ZirCAD) foram fabricados e distribuídos em 7 grupos (n = 43): Grupo C (controle): sem tratamento; Grupo Al: jateamento com partícula de Al2O3 de 27 µm; Grupo L: liner; Grupo P: plasma; Grupo Al+L: jateamento + liner; Grupo Al+P: jateamento + plasma; Grupo P+L: plasma + liner. A superfície de Y-TZP foi caracterizada por Micrsocopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), Espectroscopia por Energia Dispersiva (EED), Microscopia por Força Atômica (MFA), perfilometria de superfície e energia livre de superfície (ELS). Difração de Raio-x (DRX) foi usada para verificar a estrutura do cristal de Y-TZP após cada tratamento de superfície realizado. A RC entre Y-TZP e a cerâmica de cobertura foi verificada após três protocolos de envelhecimento: inicial, após envelhecimento hidrotérmico (autoclave por 5h) ou termociclagem (30.000 banhos - 5-55°C). ANOVA de um (profilometria e ELS) e de dois fatores (RC) e o teste de Tukey HSD foram usados como análise estatística. Para os grupos de plasma, uma cobertura homogênea e total da superfície foi observada em MEV e MFA, com formação globular. Picos de Si foram encontrados para os grupos Al, L, Al+L e P+L. A rugosidade foi menor para os grupos C, P e Al+P. Para ELS, os maiores valores foram encontrados quando o liner foi aplicado (> 74,59 nm/Nm). O maior conteúdo monoclínico foi observado para Al+L (6,96%) e Al+P (5,86%). Para o período inicial, o grupo Al e P+L apresentaram os menores valores de RC ( 0,331). Após o envelhecimento hidrotérmico, os grupos L, P e P+L apresentaram os maiores valores de RC (> 8,25 MPa; P< 0,001). Após a termociclagem, os grupos P, L, Al+L e Al+P apresentaram os maiores valores de RC (> 6,35 MPa; P < 0,001). Foram constatadas alterações na topografia da Y-TZP e na RC com a CC, de acordo com os tratamentos realizados. O tratamento com plasma melhorou a resistência ao cisalhamento e não causou transformação de fase(AU)


To characterize the zirconia (Y-TZP) surface submitted to different surface treatments (with and without plasma associations) and to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) with the veneering ceramic (VC) after different aging methods. 301 3Y-TZP specimens (IPS e.max ZirCAD) were fabricated and distributed into 7 groups (n=43): Group C (control): no treatment; Group Al: airborne abrasion with 27 µm Al2O3 particle; Group L: liner; Group P: plasma; Group Al+L: airborne abrasion + liner; Group Al+P: airborne abrasion + plasma; Group P + L: plasma + liner. The Y-TZP surface was characterized by SEM, EDS, AFM, surface profilometry, and surface-free energy (SFE). XRD was used to verify the crystal structure after each surface treatment performed. SBS between Y-TZP and the veneering ceramic was verified after three aging protocols: initial, after hydrothermal aging (autoclave for 5h), or thermal fatigue (30,000 baths - 5-55°C). One- (profilometry and SFE) and two-way ANOVA (SBS), and Tukey's HSD test were used as statistical analysis. For the plasma groups, a homogeneous and a full surface coverage was observed on SEM and AFM, with globular formation. Peaks of Si were found for Al, L, Al+L, and P+L groups. Roughness was lower for groups C, P, and Al+P. For SFE, the highest values were found when the liner was applied (>74.59 nm/Nm). The highest monoclinic content was observed for Al+L (6.96%) and Al+P (5.86%). For the initial period, group Al and P+L presented the lowest SBS values (< 5.85 MPa; P> 0.331). After hydrothermal aging, groups L, P, and P+L presented the highest SBS values (> 8.25 MPa; P< 0.001). After thermal fatigue, P, L, Al+L, and Al+P groups had the highest SBS values (> 6.35 MPa; P< 0.001). Changes in Y-TZP topography and the SBS with the VC were observed, according to treatments performed. Plasma treatment improved SBS and did not cause phase transformation(AU)

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the dimensional stability and maintenance of details of conventional and high stability alginates up to 5-day storage. Methods: Two types of alginates were selected (n=10) for this study, conventional (Hydrogum) and high stability alginates (Hydrogum 5), which were produced with the aid of a cylindrical metal block and a ring-shaped metal mold (Specifications 18, 19, and 25, ANSI/ADA). Ten images were obtained from the molds for the dimensional stability test, which were taken immediately after their production and at each different storage periods (15 min, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h, and 120 h) by a digital camera. The specimens were kept hermetically sealed in plastic bags (23°C) and then used to obtain 140 (n=70) dental stone models, used in the detail reproduction test, in which the angular accuracy of three grooves (20 µm, 50 µm, and 75 µm) was observed at each period. The details reproduction accuracy was classified using a predetermined score classification. Measurements of dimensional changes were made in the Corel DRAW X6 program. The data were submitted to the Student's t-test (α?#8197;= 0.05). Results: A statistically significant difference concerning the size of the matrix was observed after 24h for both alginates, and a statistically significant negative linear dimensional change (contraction) was verified after 24 h of storage (1.52% for the high stability alginate, and 1.32% for the conventional alginate). The high stability alginate kept the full details for 72 hours, while the conventional alginate, for 24 h. Both alginates reproduced the 75 µm groove at all storage periods. Conclusion: Impressions made with both alginates presented satisfactory clinical results when the alginates were immediately poured.


RESUMO Objetivo: O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a estabilidade dimensional e manutenção de detalhes de alginatos convencionais e de alta estabilidade por até 5 dias de armazenamento. Métodos: Para esse estudo, foram selecionados dois tipos de alginatos: convencional (Hydrogum) (n = 10) e de alta estabilidade (Hydrogum 5) (n = 10), sendo produzidos com o auxílio de um bloco metálico cilíndrico e um molde metálico em forma de anel (especificações 18, 19 e 25, ANSI/ADA). Para o teste de estabilidade dimensional, dez imagens foram obtidas imediatamente e para cada tempo de armazenamento (15 min, 24, 48, 72, 96 e 120 horas), realizadas por câmera digital. As amostras foram mantidas hermeticamente fechadas em sacos plásticos (23°C). Para o teste de reprodução de detalhes, as amostras foram utilizadas para obter 140 (n = 70 por grupo) modelos de gesso, sendo observada a precisão angular de três sulcos (20 µm, 50 µm e 75 µm) para cada período. A precisão da reprodução de detalhes foi classificada usando uma classificação de pontuação predeterminada. As medições das mudanças dimensionais foram feitas no programa Corel DRAW X6. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste t de Student (α = 0,05). Resultados: Foi observada diferença estatística em relação à matriz após 24h para ambos os alginatos. Uma mudança dimensional linear negativa estatisticamente significativa (contração) foi verificada após 24 h de armazenamento (1,52% para alginato de alta estabilidade; 1,32% para alginato convencional). O alginato de alta estabilidade manteve os detalhes completos por até 72 horas, enquanto o alginato convencional, por 24 horas. Os alginatos reproduziram o sulco de 75 µm para todos os períodos. Conclusão: As impressões feitas com ambos os alginatos devem ser imediatamente vazadas para se ter resultados clínicos satisfatórios.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Exposure of silicone prostheses to environmental factors can alter their properties, affecting longevity. However, whether nonthermal plasma (NTP) can prevent these alterations is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface roughness (Ra), sorption, solubility, and color stability (ΔE00) of the MDX4-4210 and A-120 silicones, with and without NTP treatment in accordance with an independent analysis of the use of 2 pigmentations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred sixty specimens were fabricated and distributed into 16 groups (n=10) as per the silicone, pigmentation, and NTP coating. The NTP was applied, and the Ra, sorption, solubility, and ΔE00 were evaluated before and after accelerated aging. ANOVA was used, and the HSD Tukey test was applied (α=.05). RESULTS: NTP generated an increase in roughness after aging, regardless of pigmentation or silicone. A-120 silicone without NTP showed a reduction in roughness after aging, regardless of pigmentation. For sorption and solubility, the bronze pigmentation (for A-120 and MDX4-4210) presented the smallest results after NTP treatment. For MDX4-4210 with pink pigmentation and NTP, sorption decreased and solubility increased. For A-120 with pink pigmentation and NTP, sorption and solubility increased. Sorption was reduced in all situations, except for A-120 with pink pigmentation, which increased. Regardless of the silicone used, solubility was reduced after NTP for bronze pigmentation. For A-120 and MDX4-4210 with pink pigmentation and NTP, the solubility increased. For both pigmentations, the NTP treatment promoted lower color alteration only for the A-120 silicone after accelerated aging (within the acceptability threshold). CONCLUSIONS: The NTP protocol of this study, which was applied to facial silicones, generated inconsistent results between the evaluated properties. Therefore, the NTP protocol used does not seem to be ideal for the treatment of silicone surfaces after aging.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the roughness, surface energy, and the bond strength of lithium disilicate yielded by two different types of nonthermal plasma (NTP), oxygen- or argon-based, compared to the conventional method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-three lithium disilicate (IPS e.max Press) samples were divided into 3 groups: HF (hydrofluoric acid group); ONTP (oxygen-based NTP group); ANTP (argon-based NTP group). Surface energy and roughness analyses were performed before and after surface treatment, and bond strength testing was performed before and after 5000 thermocycles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the surface treatments. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Bonferroni's test with statistical significance set at 5%. RESULTS: The ONTP group presented the highest surface energy values, followed by ANTP and HF. In addition, the ONTP group had higher surface roughness. SEM revealed exposed lithium disilicate crystals in the HF group, but a homogeneous film coverage in both NTP groups. Regarding bond strength, ANTP presented statistically significantly higher values than the other groups before thermocycling, and statistically significantly lower values than the other groups after thermocycling. The HF and ONTP groups presented statistically similar values after thermocycling. CONCLUSION: The bond strength of resin cement to lithium disilicate obtained after oxygen-based NTP was comparable with that obtained after conventional hydrofluoric acid treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Overcoming substantial shortcomings of soft liners as physico-chemical changes and liner-biofilm-related infections remains a challenge in the rehabilitation treatment. In this study, protective non-thermal plasma (NTP) treatments were developed on the soft liner surface to improve its surface and physico-chemical properties and to reduce fungal colonization after biofilm inhibition challenge. METHODS: Resinous liner specimens (Coe-Soft) were prepared and distributed in 3 groups according to the surface treatments: (1) untreated (control); (2) treated with sulfur hexafluoride-based NTP (SF6); and (3) treated with hexamethyldisiloxane-based NTP (HMDSO). To test the NTP stability and their protective and antimicrobial effect on the liner surface over time, the morphology, chemical composition, roughness, water contact angle, shore A hardness, sorption and solubility were evaluated before and after the specimens were exposed to dual-species biofilm of Candida albicans and Streptococcus oralis for 14 days. Colony forming units and biofilm structure were assessed. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Both treatments modified the surface morphology, increased hydrophobicity and roughness of the liner, and were effective to reduce C. albicans adhesion without affecting the commensal health-associated S. oralis. HMDSO presented chemical stability and lower hardness in both periods, whereas SF6 exhibited higher initial hardness than control and the highest sorption; contrarily, similar solubility was noted for all groups. CONCLUSION: HMDSO-based film showed improved physico-chemical properties and inhibited C. albicans biofilm. Thus, it has potential for use to control candida-related stomatitis and improve liner's stability even after being exposed to biofilm inhibition challenge.

PURPOSE: The aim was to evaluate the effect of four acidic beverages on the roughness (Ra) and color change (ΔEab) of two brands of artificial teeth and a heat-polymerized acrylic resin (HPAR) for use in a prosthetic base. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All materials were divided into 5 groups, according to the used acidic beverage (artificial saliva - control, red wine, orange juice, coke-based, and lemon juice-based soft drink). The immersion process was divided into two stages: T1 - immersion in the acidic solutions for 10 minutes for 14 days; T2 - after T1, the samples were immersed in grape juice for 14 days. The Ra of the samples was evaluated in a rugosimeter and the ΔEab in a spectrophotometer, before and after the immersions. The analysis of variance of one (ΔEab) and two factors (Ra) and Tukey were performed (α=.05). RESULTS: There was a statistical difference for roughness after immersion (T1) for Trilux and Tritone teeth, regardless of the acid solution. For Trilux teeth, all acid solutions increased Ra (P<.05). For Tritone teeth, only the coke-based soft drink did not statistically change Ra. Grape juice (T2) altered Ra only of artificial teeth (P<.05). The color was changed for all materials, after T1 and T2. CONCLUSION: In general, the acidic solutions changed the Ra and ΔEab of HPAR and artificial teeth after T1. The grape juice altered the roughness only of the artificial teeth, promoting a clinically acceptable color change in the materials.
